Gramona La Cuvee, Corpinnat 2019

One of the great joys of loving fine sparkling wine, has recently been the rediscovery of the very, very high quality of those that come from Spain.

This is a brilliant example.

Smooth and fresh, this elegant and versatile sparkling wine has tiny bubbles, a crisp acidity and a gorgeous, mouthwatering citrus character. A wonderful nose of white flowers, peach and apricot, with a pinch of dry fruit and aromatic herbs. The palate is long and mouth-filling with a long, clean and delicate finish decorated by flowers and pastry notes. Perfect for an aperitif, but best when enjoyed throughout a meal.

This absolute gem of a wine is produced by the renowned Gramona winery. This bubbly is a blend made from the "Cava Trilogy" of Xarel-lo, Macabeo and droplet of  Parellada grapes.

Hold on a minute, but why is it called Corpinnat then?

There has been a huge shift in the world of Cava, with some of the best and most respected producers leaving the DO and forming their own classification. This was quite simply because of their dissatisfaction with the perceived image of Cava as an inexpensive wine of fair to middling quality.

Gramona was among one of these producers and in 2017, they voluntarily left the Cava DO. They felt the requirements for achieving the classification were being loosened too much, allowing wine producers from other parts of Spain to make wine with lower standards. Essentially, the brand was being weakened, so they set up their own. After leaving Cava behind, Gramona created their own 'brand', Corpinnat, a portmanteau of two Spanish words that mean “heart of Penedès.” This new category, required winemakers to adhere to the natural winemaking techniques and philosophy Gramona already practiced. To be called Corpinnat requires 100% organic and sustainable winemaking and grapes harvested by hand. All the things that Gramona thinks are important, and rightly so.

Hand harvested grapes, with immediate passing through the sorting table followed by whole bunch pressing. The juice of each grape variety is fermented separately; fifteen percent of the cuvée enjoys twelve months of ageing in 300-litre oak barrels, before being bottled for secondary fermentation. After bottling, the bottles are aged for a minimum of 36 months in the cellar. Just at the moment of disgorging, a minimum dosage of 5 grams per litre is carried out.

Gramona is one of the most renowned wineries in Spain and possesses a long tradition dating back to 1850. The care passionately about their sense of place and identity, that they believe comes from their Mediterranean terroir. The style of their wines is also marked by and the lengthy ageing periods spent in bottle, the common denominator found in the world's finest sparkling wines. Over the years, they consolidated their position as makers of sparkling wines, following the same path as the Raventós family (Codorniu), to move away from mass-production to smaller-scale fine wines that really do articulate the sense of land and climate in which they find themselves.

Today Gramona has more than 150 hectares that are controlled (many owned as well), by the fifth generation of the Gramona family, Jaime and Xavier, who direct the winery's operations.

This sparkling wine has a fresh and pleasant character. It rests for 40 months in the bottle with its lees and is hugely versatile: though it's ideal to consume while enjoying a good aperitif, it is a very nice surprise for inquisitive palates at the dinner table.

Gramona is without any doubt one of the most renowned of Spanish sparkling wine producers, although they also produce fantastic still white wines. The winery dates back to 1850, when the outbreak of phylloxera in France forced winemakers and growers to cross to the Pyrenees. Gramona is located in the small townland of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia - Anoia being the river so important to this corner of Spain, which gives rise to its own, new appellation... have a look at Raventos i Blanc for that!
