Breuer, Mehrlein, Lunden, Riesling "Venture" Rheingau 2021

The project of friends based in the historic Rheingau, this is a mouth-watering, bright, fresh and fruity triumph of modern vision for Riesling!

It's a real lime-lover's Riesling with pert acidity and really delicious ripe citrus flavours in abundance. The palace is mountain-stream-crystal-clear yet as dry as the shore. A gorgeous wine.

But there are loads of gorgeous Rieslings... What I really love about this one is the provenance. Teresa Breuer is the heiress to the wonderful Georg Breuer winery in Rüdesheim am Rhein, which is no small undertaking as it has a phenomenal reputation and back-catalogue of wines that is simply breathtaking. With a house style to reckon with, I find it really interesting that there could be room to have an alternative view of the land, climate and grape variety that has made the house such a famous name. This then is how it is achieved - in partnership with friends Thorsten Mehrlein (from Weingut Bernhard Mehrlein) and Marcus Lunden, who is a Swedish former sommelier and cellar-master in the Breuer winery itself.

Made from grapes grown in the various soil types - from rich to mineral - that the Rhein possesses at this point (the label is a depiction of the river as it runs past the town of Rüdesheim, opposite the monastic settlement of Bingen), the wine is designed to be a "passport" to the wines of the Rheingau. The grapes are fermented in whole bunch clusters in stainless steel vats where the wine is then aged for about eight months.
