Spectacular.

From one of the best producers in Portugal and certainly one of the pioneers of dry wines in the Douro valley, this is a fantastic wine that punches well-above its (not inconsiderable) weight. Elegant, concentrated, profound and complex with all the winemaking trickery you'd expect - whole bunches, auto-lagares, malolactic fermentation and two years in barrel - it is incredibly well-balanced offering only 12.5% alcohol and a sense of austerity that makes you sit up and seriously take note. Never heavy nor flimsy - this is stellar stuff.

It's modern on the one hand and completely deferential to old-school traditions on the other. A really stunning achievement, for sure; but it's absolutely gorgeous and that's what we love about it most.

Niepoort say that this wine represents the region: extreme with a rigorous character. Who are we to argue it... Certainly the wine is made from the oldest and best parcels of vines in the Quinta do Napoles and Pinhao schistous vineyards that they own, which are mostly Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão. The average age of vines is over 70 years...

If you want a comparison for this wine, you could wonder about the other end of the same river - is it like Ribera del Duero? Well, in a word, no. There's so much more freshness and restraint and the grape varieties are nothing like Tempranillo. This is far more akin to the north of the Medoc and old fashioned Saint Estephe properties in particular. The Tinta Amarela variety adding that amazing dark colour and herbaceous acidity like a Portuguese Cabernet Franc. It is of course outstanding in its own field and is really only comparable with other classic Douro reds, but the reference is interesting - if it was from that echelon of Bordeaux, you could certainly double or treble the price point.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
