Borgo del Tiglio, Collio Bianco 2020

€36.99

This is one of the greatest Italian white wines made today.

Sensational texture, sensational flavour, delivered with pinpoint precision and refinement. It almost feels chiselled from the terroir on account of the mineral structure that is possesses. With flavours of ripe peach, blossom, apricot, notes honey, minerals and herbs, it is joyful as it is profound. A truly remarkable wine.

The wines of Borgo del Tiglio are from the subzone of Collio, which is one of the two stellar regions in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Set in hills toward the Slovenian boarder, the best slopes face south, toward the top of the Adriatic sea near Trieste. Here, Nicola Manferrari has worked out his vision of the terroir over the past four decades.

When he took on the family farm after his father's sudden death, the grapes they grew were sold in bulk to mass-production wineries. Unimpressed by the style of wines being made from his grapes, he wanted to make wines that were livelier, fuller and yet, still expressive of his region. He planted Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling to add flavour and acidity to the often underwhelming Friulano. He then planted Chardonnay with a very definite decision to make wines in the form of Burgundy. at the time, blending was uncommon in most of Friuli, but has since become accepted practice as the best way to extract the highest potential from the Collio subzone. That's the impact he has had on the region. And his Chardonnay project has spawned multiple imitations from the many fans of his wines in the region. Indeed, the quality from the estate regularly keeps the wines at the very top table of the world's white wines. Not bad for a man who trained as a pharmacist.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
