Campillo, Rioja, Blanco

€18.99

A classy, classic wine from a region becoming more recognised for white wines in recent years, this is a complex and rewarding bottle that will make you sit up and wonder "why haven't we had white Rioja before?!"

There are bright fruit flavours of lemon and yellow apple, supported by notes of shortbread and a creamy note in the palate. The finish is dry and refreshingly zingy while never being austere. It's superbly balanced and excellent with food.

Fermented in barriques, this wine has a softer and more complex set of flavour characteristics than other Spanish whites at this price point, yet it's not an overtly 'oaky' wine, which allows the fruit flavours to sing in each glass. It's the best of both worlds!

The winery, Bodega Campillo, is a concept of architecture and wine - nice - and is very much in the Bordeaux Château model, with the vines for production all surrounding the winery building, rather than being in many places dotted all over the region as is the case with most Rioja wine production. This allows for control and monitoring and for a great sense of place in the resulting wine. There are 50 hectares of vines and a highly desirable aspect facing the Sierra Cantabria mountains, making it a perfect place for ripening grapes. Based in Laguardia in the Alavesa region, the winery is not one of those in the shiny modern or modernist style, rather it is a blend of Roman pastiche, octagons and post-modern imperialism. Well, it was built in 1990 after all.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
