Champagne Laurent Perrier, La Cuvée
This Champagne is the calling card for this exceptional house. Made with over 50% Chardonnay, this is fresh, crisp and complex, delivering a wonderful palate of citrus fruit, orange blossom, apple and white peach. It is a delicious wine that would be a very fine aperitif, but excellent with shellfish and very good poultry dishes.
This wonderful Champagne house has undergone something of a quiet revolution over the last decade. The change from their Brut to La Cuvée was more of a marking of passed time rather than a re-brand. The dominance of Chardonnay in their wines has always been a brilliant feature - this new name was the clarification of the style that many of us already knew.
This Champagne is a triumph of the skills of the blender and cellar-master (as is the case in so many houses in Champagne), this particular wine being made from around 100 different reserve wines that they have made from various different vintages.
It's a long process and shows why wine styles can stay so consistent and why change is often treated with healthy scepticism. However, in Laurent-Perrier's case, the change to the style we now see in La Cuvée was almost inevitable as it foreshows the house philosophy from beginning to end - their most famous wine is, after all, not a single vintage, but indeed a blend of three stand-out vintages, their Grand Siècle. That's for a different day.
