Domaine Maurice Charleux, Maranges 1er Cru Rouge 'Clos des Rois'
This is a brilliant, tense, lush and complex pinot noir that is outstanding value for money given its provenance (1er Cru Villages level from the Cote d'Or) and also, quite simply, its quality. Medium bodied and full of ripe summer fruits, very subtle spice and developing sous bois. Magic.
Maurice Charleux is a superb Burgundian winemaker and is interestingly skilled in both disciplines of red and white. In his home turf at the south of the Cote d'Or, are the towns of Santenay and Maranges that have given him a superb array of colours from which to paint (in bottle) these stunning wines.
