Protos, Ribera del Duero, Crianza
This is meaty and rich, oaky and full and surprisingly incredibly easy to drink! 100% Tempranillo, it is made from 30-35-year old manually harvested vineyards. With a very particular ageing regime and more than 14 months in barrel, this is clearly a wine that is intended to be serious. Serious, perhaps, but also absolutely gorgeous, with ripe and overripe red fruit flavours, vanilla and cinnamon spices and a pulpy rich structure.
This is a wine that almost never fails to impress and though we mightn't throw it into a garden party, it would be fantastic with jamón, mature cheeses, roasts and and grills - either vegetable or meat or both!
Protos is one of the most significant and important wineries in the Ribera del Duero region, being one of the first wineries to celebrate the unique climate and terroir in its vineyards. As the unofficial owner of the appellation's name, there is an expectation that they will maintain their lofty position with consistency and style. However, they're not without energy, vision or enterprise and some of the wines are genuinely exciting and possess a vitality that established wineries often lack. They have recently expanded the original winery and bought land (and built more wineries) in Rueda and Cigales. Their future, and as a result, the future of Spanish wines, is in very good shape if they are anything to go by.
