The Dissenter's Mixed Case - 6 bottles

Six different wines from Maison Ventenac, a young and dynamic project based in the vineyards of the Ramé family in Cabardès, just north of the city of Carcassonne, at the (fairly wild) west of the Languedoc.

The Dissenters are what the Ramé family consider to be the soul of Maison Ventenac. Their best plots managed in the most natural way possible. Organic viticulture, indigenous yeasts, a respect for biodiversity, with minimum addition of sulfites, and not too much in the way of oak influence.

We really love and admire the up front and no nonsense messaging in their Dissenters range. It reflects the Ramé family's pushing the boundaries to find ways to express their interpretation of the land.

In this case, we have four reds, two whites with one of each of the following:

  1. L'Idiot Merlot. A homage to the character Miles from the 2004 film Sideways and the many other wine consuming 'elite' who won't drink Merlot. Made in small batches and blended to a very soft, smooth and delicious wine, showing Merlot's low tannins, plum, red cherry and plum-ripe fruit.
  2. Le Paria Grenache. The Paria or outcast, made from Grenache, at one time a bit of undesirable or outcast variety planted in Cabardès. Previously dismissed as "not ripe enough" for some, or "not in the right place" for others. In the hands of Maison Ventenac, it's "just perfect".
  3. Réserve de Jeanne Red Blend Made as an homage to their situation between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, this is a gorgeous blend of Cabernet Franc and Syrah.
  4. Marie White Blend - delicious and fresh and a cross between southern France's tropical fruit flavoured whites with the floral and pretty whites of the west coast. The perfect Ventenac white!
  5. Carole Chardonnay - not quite Burgundy by the sea, but not too far off. Along with Chardonnay, it has 5% Gros Manseng in there too. Fresh, lively, and ripe. Lovely.
  6. Préjugés Chardonnay This wine came about by Oliver Ramé reassessing one of his prejudices, not liking barrel-aged white wines, so he set out to prove himself wrong. Or right... This is fresh, mineral and crisp Chardonnay that is a superb balance of place and winemaking, marrying maritime influences with Burgundian winemaking practices.

Cabardès is an unusual appellation which is characterised by the split between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, their vineyards are likewise split between the Atlantic (Cabernets Sauvignon & Franc, Merlot and Malbec) and the Mediterranean vines (Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvedre).

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
