Domaine Jean Bousquet, Reserve Malbec
This is the beefed-up, richer, fuller and heavier version of the excellent Malbec from Jean Bousquet. Made from a selection of the better vineyard areas and specifically chosen vats of fermenting wines, it is a really elegant and effortlessly delicious red that oozes charm. Loaded with blackberry, pepper, hints of spice, prune and red berries, it is velvet smooth with silky tannins.
The Domaine Bousquet estate is relatively young with vines planted in 1997; the really interesting thing is that it was fourth-generation winemaker Jean who fell in love with Argentina in the 1990s and left his family's Carcassonne winery to explore this amazing land. It was barren when he arrived, because the land he was looking at first was Gualtallary, the highest district in Mendoza, which had been left untouched by previous growers as it wouldn't ripen grapes in the way that lower vineyards would. This, of course, became the reason that Jean chose the site - it made the harvest return grapes that were distinctly fresher and more French, which made him feel very much at home. So at home that this wine, though called Malbec, is a blend with 85% Malbec, and 5% each of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. No wonder it is so complete and round...
Operations at the winery are now run by Jean's daughter Anne, and her husband Labid Al Ameri. The success that has followed is phenomenal - making more than 5 million bottles each year, they export to over fifty countries and have expanded the vineyard area to 240 hectares. With organic wines of this quality, it's set to continue growing in its importance over the coming decades.
