This is an arrestingly good Sancerre; come to that it's just amazing white wine.
One of the best Sauvignon Blancs we're ever tried, it is mineral but fruity, dry but full of flavour, mouthwatering but not overly-acidic. A perfectly balanced wine with flavours of green apples, blackcurrant leaf, herbs, stone fruit, and a citrus backbone of acidity that makes you want to come back for more.
We were stopped in our tracks.
This wine has a wonderful history, coming from an estate dating back fourteen generations the the 1550s. This family-run winery have vineyards in some of the best areas in the whole of the Sancerre region, with vines in all of the best soil types and climates around the key village of Verdigny, to the north of the Sancerre zone on the west of the Loire valley. Their fifty plots are located in argilo-calcaire, flint and chalk soils in various sites, all within minutes of each other. this allows for close control, but also for the living out of the winery's philosophy of Lutte Raisonnée (or common sense vineyard management if you like) which will soon lead to their vineyards being certified organic.
This wine is the best blended Sancerre that they produce, coming from a selection of the top single site wines from across the different soil types to add complexity and to give the best possible sense of the estate's vision of a broader Sancerre picture. It's really very, very compelling.
