Domaine Drouhin, Dundee Hills, Pinot Noir, Oregon 2018

€54.99

A sumptuous and seductive Pinot Noir from a family with genuine pedigree, in a region that consistently delivers Pinot Noirs full of character, identity and finesse.

This is a gorgeous wine. A fragrant nose with bright red fruit, black cherries, bramble fruits and notes of orange peel, sweet spices and a touch of gorgeously, perfectly-integrated oak. The palate is beautifully balanced with ripe fruit flavours, elegant tannins and a lovely broad and delineated finish.

You'll wonder how and why Burgundy has a hold on pricing and market share when you open this. It is so fine and elegant yet obviously approachable that the reaction I had was to wonder why they had kept the prices as low as they are... However, it's still pricey and though less expensive than the village-level Volnay that they make, it is not quite in the "every-day" category. But you would!

The Drouhin family have been farming vines in Oregon since the 1980s, roughly at the same time that they became fully organic in their vineyards in France. The search for vineyards was executed in the same manner in which they seek out vineyards in Burgundy - quality, availability and sustainability.

The Dundee Hills estate is 100 hectares in size and has come to be recognised as one of the top estates in Oregon, and really, the whole of the US. The family make elegant, fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from their base in the Willamette Valley, just southwest of Portland, Oregon. This wine, from Dundee Hills, benefits from the lengthy sunshine hours as well as cooling sea breezes and the heat of the continental plateau to the east. It's another amazing reminder as to the quality potential available in the USA's Pacific rim, especially from cooler spots such as this.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
