Joseph Drouhin, Volnay 2017
From one of the most-loved villages in the Cotes de Beaune region, this is a beautifully smooth, svelte and satisfying mouthful of Pinot Noir. In its youth, which this still is, the wine shows violet and blackberry, even blackcurrant, notes with only a hint of the sous bois, mushroom and spice notes that develop with age. The finish shows vanilla and sweet fruit-peel on top of the plummy damson and summer fruits flavours. It is a feast for the senses and a very typical expression of the Volnay village.
This wine is made from grapes that are grown by long-term suppliers to the Drouhin family, rather than fro many of the family-owned vineyards; but the quality is consistently excellent. Grown in soil that is typical of the appellation, they are marl and limestone with small pebbly topsoil; high density planting with low yields ensures seriously high quality at the winery.
Maison Joseph Drouhin are a family-owned and run company based right in the historical heart of the historic town of Beaune. They are steeped in history. Cellars under their central location run for multiples of kilometres and show evidence of major historical occupations from fragments of Roman walls to the bricks used to hide wine from the Nazis in the 1940s.
All of their wines are certified organic and their own domaine vineyards are biodynamic. You won't see this anywhere on their labels however, because their belief is that quality in the glass is the only way in which their wines should be judged. True, they believe that this is best done via organic farming, but this in itself isn't reason for preferential treatment: that comes when you try their wines!
