l'Ormarine 'Préambule' Picpoul de Pinet

€15.99

A fresh, light, salty tangy wine from France's south coast.

One of the more recent developments in wine has concerned white wines from warmer climates which would have been traditionally and almost exclusively where grapes for red wines would have grown. One great example of this, a white that has really become much more popular in recent years, is Picpoul de Pinet.

It’s really fresh, light and delicate. It’s fair to say that it’s unlike anything else that's around. If I had to use a comparison I’d say it’s like really moderate Sauvignon Blanc but doesn't taste like it, or like a much prettier Chardonnay but without the weight and much more refined than an intense Alsatian Riesling. Picpoul de Pinet really is its own thing.

The grape variety is Picpoul, from the town of Pinet, so fairly easy to get your head around. And it has its own special-shaped bottle too. This particular one comes from  a cooperative called l’Ormarine.

Pinet itself is a tiny town between Béziers and Montpellier. There’s the Mediterranean, the hills of the Languedoc and an extraordinary inland lake or lagoon, the Étang de Thau, which all combine, no doubt, to influence the ripening of these Picpoul grapes and give the wine this lightness as well as this wonderful salty, tangy feel to it which engages your tongue in a different way to other high acidity zesty wines.

Great with a range of fish dishes, with salads and on its own as an aperitif.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
