This is a gorgeous red that has impressed internationally with its layers of dark fruits, spices and mouth-coating texture. Jet-black and shiny in colour the dense fruits flavours are couched by a delicious lick of oak, it is really well-balanced and more complex than many other wines from Toro, largely on account of the ageing - this is five years old already and is in pitch-perfect condition.

Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, there is a surprising elegance in this wone that some other big-bruisers miss; the ageing time and nature of the oak leaves less overt oak flavours and instead allows for a more relaxed and complex wine to be nurtured. It's a great plan, but is an expensive one - what's even greater here is that the price for the quality is brilliant!

Made by Bodegas Torreduero in Torro, this wine is interestingly made from a variant of Tempranillo grown in Toro called, Tinta del Toro (which means "red grape of Toro"). So far, so predictable: however, this strain of Tempranillo has slightly different root structures and is resistant to Phylloxera, meaning that these vines in Toro are often extremely old and un-grafted, unlike most of the rest of the vineyards in the world. Impressive stuff!

The bodega is part of a large Rioja-based group and has lots of well-meaning goals such as retaining traditions while looking forward to modernity... though it may lack some of the nuance and dynamism of smaller wineries, there is a lovely guardianship sense that this production of high-quality, old-vines, aged Tempranillo is carried out with class and refinemant in a way that is often the preserve of larger wineries with deep pockets. You want a classy, shiny wine? These are the sorts of people who can make it for you.
