Marquis de Bellefont, St Emilion Grand Cru 2013

€32.99

Structured, balanced and medium-bodied, this is an old-fashioned style St Emilion well-worthy of Grand Cru status, even though it's actually the second wine of the estate!

Flavours of bramble, berry and developing cedar and some leather spice are delivered on the gently pushy palate, making this a wine fit for excellent food or even very little.

It's now from the underrated 2013 vintage and it is a mark of the property's honour that in this more challenging vintage, the main Chateau wine was reduced in output, meaning that the fruit normally destined for its use was incorporated into this blend, the second wine of the estate! This is the very closest many of us will bet to the Cru Classe itself.

Dating from the late eighteenth century, Chateau Bellefont-Belcier, the parent property, is at the north of the St. Emilion zone, where it makes Grand Cru Classé wines. Its name allegedly comes from Belle Fontaine, meaning 'beautiful spring’ (a reference to the numerous springs near the property) and to its founder, the Marquis of Belcier. The Marquis de Bellefont is a suitable elision of the two, turned around.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
