Pombal do Vesuvio, Douro

€29.99

This is a brilliant, elegant and stunning red.

The first of only two dedicated still red wines to come from the legendary Quinta do Vesuvio on the Douro Valley. Supremely polished and perfectly poised, you get floral notes and subtle sweet spices with an expressive palate of dark fruit, black plums and wild berry flavous. The oak is so soft and integrated you barely notice it until you go looking for it - always the sign of superb quality.

Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the most famous vineyards in the Douro and its fortified Port wines are extremely highly-sought after. This, then, is some balls-y move by the winery to forego production of what would be amazing Port by allocating grapes from old vines at the heart of the winery to a Table Wine. But such is the market, that one can imagine how and why it is that there is an expectation that all producers that are able to, should make still wines to assist in the elevation of the broader 'brand Portugal'. Given the quality seen here and, for example, in the Niepoort still wines, you can understand the allure of making incredible vineyard-driven wines that tell a different story of your vineyards to that of the fortified wines. No better nor any worse.

And the cool thing? We're the permanent beneficiaries!

This particular wine comes from vines grown in the middle of the winery in a vineyard that surrounds an old dovecote, Pombal in Portuguese, which is at an elevation of 22 metres above sea level. The vines are traditionally planted in terraces and are almost all Touriga Nacional with an average age of 40 years. The winery is also very traditional and use human feet in the lagares to crush the grapes for all their wines - without exception.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
