Protos Ribera del Duero Roble
This is a superb introduction to the world of Ribera del Duero and a stunning alternative view of Spanish Tempranillo. It is full but with breathing space for food-matching and more casual enjoyment; you don't need much effort here!
Aged for a minimum of three months in American and French oak barrels, this is made from a selection of younger vines that the winery select. Certainly more than an "also-ran", this is a very genuine wine made in a youthful, fruit-forward style that is not what we've come to associate with Ribera del Duero. It's more digestible and fresher than many other Crianza or Reserva expressions from the region but has much of the charm and flavour characteristics that we do want and that we do expect to see!
Protos is one of the most significant and important wineries in the Ribera del Duero region, being one of the first wineries to celebrate the unique climate and terroir in its vineyards. As the unofficial owner of the appellation's name, there is an expectation that they will maintain their lofty position with consistency and style. However, they're not without energy, vision or enterprise and some of the wines are genuinely exciting and possess a vitality that established wineries often lack.
They have recently expanded the original winery and bought land (and built more wineries) in Rueda and Cigales. Their future, and as a result, the future of Spanish wines, is in very good shape if they are anything to go by.
