This is gum-tingling, mouth-watering, blossom-scented, Albariño-smashing, hum-dinging white from the ultra-fashionable north of Spain.
Made by super-cool and superbly gifted winemaker Raúl Pérez, this is a candidate for best white wine of the year.
Delicious flavours of white peach, greengage and dried herbs with a scintillating texture and mouth-feel, this wine is a sheer joy for lunch or dinner and will come to life with a vast array of cuisine. From a sausage casserole to crab salad and many more in between. Proof, if it were needed, that structured white is well and truly available for selection outside Burgundy.
Raúl Pérez Pereira is regarded as one of the most exciting winemakers in the world today. He makes wine on his family estate and his first vintage, in 1994 (when he was 22 years old), set a clear course for what has since become known as "The New Spain". A decade later he left the family business to establish Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, which has since become one of the flagship wineries for the Bierzo appellation.
Since then he has rooted himself across the north of Spain in Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra and Tierra de León, adding these wonderful terroirs to his portfolio. The chance that they water-down his focus in Bierzo, however, is zero: for one thing, his family have farmed there for over 300 years!
