Terres Fidèles

The South of France is a reference point for many things - sun, sea, sand... the other thing... holidays, Cézanne, Lavender, Herbs de Provence and the cult of Rosé wines. From other wine points of view, the fine wine world is abandoned by all but a few well-known wineries in lofty mountain villages or in pockets of historic appellations.

But this winery is a wonderful exception. Based as far south as you can be in France, the borders of vineyards used by Terres Fidèles really do run up to the north of Spain. It is land that is home to some of the oldest and highest quality Grenache in the world, that has been, alas, often overlooked for use in fine dry wines and turned instead into the fortified wines for which the region has built such a fine reputation. But where there is fine Grenache... there is sure to be Fergal Tynan in hot pursuit. Or lurking nearby and in 2016 he and his band of merry Grenache-lovers identified sites and vineyards that had been left to rack and ruin and, with the help of some seriously impressive local big-hitters, began this wonderful, insightful, authentic, generous and joyful project.

Encompassing wines from the regions immediately outside the city or Perpignan and those to the north by the appellations beside the Ventoux, there is really something for everyone here. They have found "Faithful Soils" and a slowly and carefully going about the business of putting these wines very firmly on the map and in the places where these grapes belong.

These make a stunning collection of wines for which we seem to be on the look to find excuses to drink. And continue to succeed. With ease.
