Bohórquez Reserva, Ribera del Duero 2016

€39.99

A breath-taking red that is complex, refined, aged and age-worthy. This single-vineyard Reserva will make you long for a bigger bottle, more time and the best company that you can imagine. This is multi-award-winning wine from a wonderful region and a wonderful man.

Made from the oldest and highest altitude plots of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines in this vineyard, the wine that comes out of these grapes is then aged for a minimum of eight years before release. Staying in a commination of French and American oak barriques for up to a year and a half, the wine is then bottled and left for years, in order to mature, soften its tannins and develop the incredible layers of complexity that mark its wonderful quality.

Flavours of black fruits, crushed strawberries, cocoa, spice and a mineral balance, this is a very serious wine that, though released ready to drink, is capable of decades of ageing. The flagship wine of the Bodega, this is divine-like in its completeness with not an edge in sight; a long, flavour-filled finish that you'd expect from any of the top regions of Europe, but never at this quite astonishing price.

Javier Bohórquez is a frequent visitor to Ireland, loving to fish and meet old friends. His home in the Peñafiel district of the Ribera del Duero gives the best and most elegant of the region's wines as well as some of the most famous. He is a quiet, tall and charming man who is generous and patient, talented and visionary. Eschewing the powerful blockbuster styles of many of his neighbours, he has successfully attempted to show that the potential for elegant, age-worthy wines from the Ribera del Duero is real and achievable if you, like, him have the ability for perseverance and the capacity for patience. His wines are remarkably approachable, soft, complex and rewarding. It's just happy coincidence that he himself is such a great chap!

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
