Casa Ferreirinha, Vinha Grande Rosé, Douro

€21.99

This is one of the most celebrated and famous Douro wineries, but in the form of a delicious, charming and beautiful rosé. Made from 100% Touriga Nacional grapes grown at 600 metres of altitude, the balance is created by the hot days and cool nights, which gives loads of fruit flavours with a gorgeous crisp palate.

The vineyards are planted in terraces and also in canopy, so that they can be sure that the grapes get the best ripening possible as well as a blend of style - one gives fruitier grapes the other more acidity - and the soils that are so poor and eroded actually encourage the vines to dig deep and form structure themselves with extensive root systems.

The dark and thick-skinned Tourga Nacional grapes are handled very carefully in the winery and are left for only a very short time in contact with the wine, in order to give just the faintest of colour influences to the fermenting juice. This then last for just a few hours at the most, and the impact on the colour is that gorgeous Provence-style onion-skin pale pink. The inpact in the flavour from this short maceration, however, is massive! It's a process that give the wines al the red fruit, berry and currant notes that you could wish for. It really is winemaking from people who know the area inside and out.

Hugely important as promoter of Portuguese still wines (as opposed to fortified wines), Casa Ferreirinha stole a march on other producers by becoming the first ever producer to solely make non-fortified wines in the Douro Valley. This focus has positioned them as the preeminent authority on the region's best sites for the production of still wines, and has given them access to these zones and vineyards far earlier and for much longer than anyone else. Unfair advantage or visionary benefits - it doesn't matter - the wines are unbelievably good; approachable, elegant, complex and refined. And they even have a legendary wine to show for it all, the unattainable Barca-Velha. Go on, google it.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
