One of the most recognizable brands in the world, a unique colour for its packaging and label, and a rich and full-bodied set of flavours that make it hugely popular to this day: many people think Champagne and immediately think Veuve Cliquot. Or Möet et Chandon, which is funny, because they are famously part of the same ownership, who probably don't mind which brand one thinks of, so long as it's theirs.

It's quite difficult to know what to say about this Champagne house without running out of superlatives; but it's suffice to say that Champagne as we know it wouldn't exist without Veuve Clicquot.

Philippe Clicquot created the winery at the end of the 18th century and his son married Barbe Ponsardin. When she was widowed, she inherited the winery and began the modernising revolution to made the Champagnes that became the blueprint for the following century.

She made the first Vintage Champagne in 1810 and most importantly invented the riddling table in 1816, which for the first time ever, allowed for Champagnes to be made in a crystal-clear style. She then went on to make the first Rosé Champagne made from wines (rather than from adding elderberries, which had been the practice before) in 1818. What a woman.

It wasn't until 1877 that the registration of the Yellow Label took place and even this was breaking new ground in the use of a colour never before seen for a wine label... funny how the things we might assume to be a marketing ploy by today's global corporations were actually, well, the marketing ploys of pioneering companies over a hundred and forty years ago. Just goes to show that quality never goes out of fashion,

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
