Glera

A grape with a little EU controversy attached. It was (and is often still) called

Prosecco, and like many things, it has everything to do with geography. It hailed originally from Slovenia, and made its way to the village of Prosecco, near Trieste. In 2009 the EU renamed it to "Glera" to give geographical protection to Prosecco, the drink. It is grown mainly in the Veneto region, traditionally in an area near Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, two place names you'll often see on a bottle of Prosecco.
