This is a stunning Super Tuscan with a reputation of its own. Complex and structured yet totally approachable, it could age for decades and still be identifiable and defiantly Tuscan.
Often described as the "second wine" of Sassicaia, Guidalberto is indeed that, but also so much more. The winemakers at Tenuta San Guido never intended for Guidalberto to follow the same path as Sassicaia but rather for it to be an alternative expression of their amazing and unique terroir. It nearly has its own release dates and sales channels such is the demand for both Sassicaia and Guidalberto; yet the familial similarities are useful guides and form an association rather than a hierarchy.
Guidalberto is a fruit forward blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%) producing a more approachable wine-drinking-wise, whilst maintaining the ability to age superbly because of the carefully extracted tannins and natural acidity.
Carlo Paoli, San Guido’s director of winemaking has been quoted as saying that this may be the best vintage of Guidalberto that he has ever made, which means we are in for a real treat!
Unfortunately, 2021 was also a vintage of lower production - whilst stock is indeed limited (as with all wines made from this fabulous estate), it is a sensational wine and all the more reason to be snapped up quick!
