Prieler, Kalkterassen Gemischter Satz, Burgenland

€2299

This delicious white is a pure and honest representation of the beautiful Burgenland in Austria. Medium-bodied a fresh, it is impressive in structure and flavour concentration with notes of white fruits, peach and blossom backed by spice and honey. Immensely enjoyable and highly versatile with food, it is an all-day wine - perfect with both lighter dishes and hearty cuisine alike.

This is a wine with a long history in Austria, but also in many, many other parts of the world. The notion of a 'field blend', where the vine grower harvests an entire field regardless of which varieties are growing there, and ferments them at the same time (or mostly). This is designed to represent the location and zonal typicities in a bottle. The winery is essentially saying "we grow this and that because it's what we've always done; this is what it tastes like to be in our place!". It's a really lovely and genuinely refreshing approach to winemaking. Honest and authentic.

The mix in this wine is a set of traditional grape varieties - Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Welschriesling (different to 'our' Riesling), Grüner Veltliner and Muscat. They are grown on limestone soils near the meltingly picturesque Lake Neusiedl.

Georg Prieler manages the family estate that has roots in the townlad that date back to 1347. It was his grandfather, however, who was the first of the family to bottle wines made from their grapes. Since then the reputation for their wines has grown and grown; recently Georg was awarded Austrian winemaker of the year. Set across a variety of vineyard soils that are limestone, schist and chalk, this is a winery that gives clear and precise wines that are truly representative of their place.
