Funkstille, Burgenland, Blaufränkisch 2022, Six-Bottle-Case

€7999 €8994

It all began with Grüner Veltliner, and now Blaufränkisch is the latest addition to Funkstille's range of wines, demonstrating their continuing desire to showcase Austria’s most famous grape varieties and championing Austrian wines.

There are three variants of the label, each with a broken piece of sound-machinery. This is the homage to 'Funkstille' or 'Radio Silence', of which Mayr reckons we could all benefit from more. We agree!

This is a six-bottle-case of it.

Made by the wonderfully charismatic and hugely talented Ferdinand Mayr, this wine comes from the Burgenland region in Austria. With medium-high altitude, the ruby red Blaufränkisch grapes come from selected south-facing vineyards , perfectly exposed to the sun, that produce a bright, ripe and abundant red wine.

All work in the vineyard is carried out sustainably, with the use of their own fertilisers made from grape skins, manure and straw from their fields, to improve the soil structure and vitality of their vines. Great care and attention are taken with canopy management to ensure good air flow and promote the growth of healthy grapes.

The Funkstille Blaufränkisch is a classic expression of this Austrian varietal;  it is an approachable, fruit driven, and easy going red wine. Blackberry and spice combine with freshness and touches of oak courtesy of ageing in old 5000 – 8000 litre barriques.  Characterful yet very approachable, this is a very versatile red that pairs perfectly with hearty winter stews or even slightly chilled for summertime drinking.
