Funkstille, Niederösterreich, Grüner Veltliner 2024, Six-Bottle-Case

€7999 €8994

A wine that we first met in the weeks before the first Covid Lockdown, this is a delightful, vibrant, engaging and delicious Grüner that will amply satisfy the grape's fans while winning new devotees among those who don't yet know it!

This is a 6-Bottle-Case of the lovely stuff.

Gorgeous flavours of exotic fruits, melon and grapefruit, with ripe orchard fruits, pear and apple with a fresh and zingy citrus backbone. Dry, textured and complex the palate is balanced with is is it's a dry wine with a balanced between freshness and richness that belies its approachable price point.

Made by the wonderfully charismatic and hugely talented Ferdinand Mayr, this wine comes from the Niederösterreich subzone in Austria. With medium-high altitude and slopes that face south-east and south-west, the conditions of these vineyards are perfect for ripening Grüner Veltliner.

The wine is made with gentle pressing and minimal intervention; a two-month ageing on the lees adds the extra texture to the wine that turns it to the gold that it is.

There are three variants of the label, each with a broken piece of sound-machinery. This is the homage to 'Funkstille' or 'Radio Silence', of which Mayr reckons we could all benefit from more. We agree!

Grüner Veltliner is a brilliant grape variety that seems to be the perfect food matching wine. Textural and semi-aromatic, it often has flavours that are on the culinary spectrum, such as tarragon, sage, oregano and, most typically, white pepper. There are very classic Grüners that almost appear as though they're made with a bouquet garni...

Delicious as an aperitif, but really good with a wide range of salads, poultry, pork and rich seafood.
