Gaja, Barbaresco, 2019

€32000

One of the most iconic wines of the world from one of the best vintages in living memory.

This is supple, structured, powerful and intense, yet balanced, with poise and grace. 100% Nebbiolo taken from the best sites in the family's fourteen vineyards located in the two villages of Barbaresco and Treiso.

It is a remarkable achievement of Gaja's that the demand for this wine grows year after year, as the quality, which was always stellar, has steadily grown in parallel. This wine is the centrepiece of Gaja's wine range and is the beating heart of his native Piemonte.

As with all of his other wines, the quality and end results are a reflection of the vineyard management but also the very careful winery approach, which is to vinify parcels completely separately and then blend them.

However, at this level of quality, the wine then returns to barrels for another 12 months of ageing before bottling. This is a significantly more expensive and labour-intensive process, but hey, it's Gaja, so who cares about costs? This is what creates the mythical complexity and consistent stylistic brilliance.

Angelo Gaja is widely considered to be the best winemaker that Italy has ever produced and is certainly one of the best living in the world today. This, then is actually one of the best wines available today - you're not a bystander here, you are part of the history of fine wine. Enjoy alone or with the very best company or a very fine dinner. Possibly both.

This 2019 vintage is set to even further push the realms of what quality is achievable in Gaja's Barbaresco; the structure, balance and poise from grapes that seem to know no harm, is a sensuous and almost other-wordly experience given that there are so few comparisons that you are likely to come across in the world of wine. Perhaps a comparison with some DRC or might work.
It's dense, but approachable; ageworthy, yet utterly gorgeous and yielding right now; complex, yet giving; mouth-coating, yet structured... and so on. It's on of the best example of place and grape variety and how to execute a philosophy that you are ever likely to come across.
It will keep for decades.
