Tenuta San Guido, Guidalberto 2023
Tenuta San Guido, Guidalberto 2023 is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
This is a stunning Super Tuscan with a reputation of its own. Complex and structured yet totally approachable, it could age for decades and still be identifiable and defiantly Tuscan.
We have VERY limited quantity of this.
Often described as the "second wine" of Sassicaia, Guidalberto is indeed that, but also so much more. The winemakers at Tenuta San Guido never intended for Guidalberto to follow the same path as Sassicaia but rather for it to be an alternative expression of their amazing and unique terroir. It nearly has its own release dates and sales channels such is the demand for both Sassicaia and Guidalberto; yet the familial similarities are useful guides and form an association rather than a hierarchy.
Guidalberto is a fruit forward blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%) producing a more approachable wine-drinking-wise, whilst maintaining the ability to age superbly because of the carefully extracted tannins and natural acidity.
The critical notes for the 2023 are universally positive.
As James Button notes in Decanter, “Guidalberto used to be great value for money, and even though it's a bit pricier these days, the quality has also improved dramatically in recent vintages as Tenuta San Guido seeks to remove the idea of Guidalberto as a ‘second wine’ by building a dedicated winemaking facility and adjusting the blend. "Guidalberto 2023 has blossomed into a grand vin all of its own. Invigorating cool forest berry flavours mingle with touches of spice and fine, silky tannins. So poised. Wow!” and he scored it a whopping 96 points.
Antonio Galloni was also impressed: “The 2023 is another terrific wine from Tenuta San Guido in this vintage. Aromatic, medium in body and gracious, the 2023 is pure charm. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, spice and blood orange all pulse through a vibrant, refreshing Guidalberto that will drink well on release. The more refined side of Bolgheri is very much on display. This is a fine effort in a year marked by heavy rains and elevated disease pressure. What a delight.” Funny that he only then gives it 92 points...
