Italo Cescon, Pinot Grigio

€17.99

The first Pinot Grigio in The Allotment.

It's a good choice too because the heritage of this wine, and that of the Cescon winery, is based in all things growing, as seen by the vine twig, or tralcetto in Italian, tied around the neck of the bottle. This physical representation of vineyard authenticity was first done by Italo's mother, Anna, in 1957 and has become the recognised feature of their wines since.

This Pinot Grigio is absolutely delicious.

From the DOC of Venezia, this is a fresh and mineral-focused wine that has lots of green apple flavours and notes of citrus fruit that lead to a bright, crisp and balanced palate. You really get the impression that this wine is made from high-quality fruit and that no set design for the wine has been followed other than that set out by the fruit's characteristics.

This is not the way that many other Pinot Grigios are made, which is why we find this one so interesting and worth getting excited by - it's wine that is engaging and vibrant and authentic that doesn't cost the earth and just happens to be made from a famous variety in a very attractive bottle!

But WAS it the first bottle to have a piece of the winter-pruned vines tied around its neck? See, there is a contention here - this is that the other 'Twig' wine from Abruzzo is made by a family that claim to be the first to do this. Honestly, we can't see and reason that there is a benefit other than marketing, because from a wine quality perspective, it seriously doesn't matter. However, it goes without saying that the two families most certainly don't send each other Christmas cards. It's a bit of handbags and though there are two wineries that do it, they are based in totally different parts of the Italian peninsula and the wines are remarkably different.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
