Marquis de Goulaine, Rosé d'Anjou

€12.99 €14.99

This is a serious wine.

It happens to be a rosé, which in our book is no bad thing at all. Year-round wines are not as common as one might think and can be in fact quite tricky - whites that are too summery, reds that are too wintry and so on. Step forward the honest, decent, well-made, textured rosé and you have a deal. This, from the Loire valley's specialist rosé appellation, is a delicious, layered and elegant wine that certainly accompanies salads perfectly, while also being a treat for beef, casseroles, poultry and bacon. It has, let's call it a snifter, of sugar left over after fermentation. But given the acidic nature of the two grapes involved, you'll be thankful for it. I have to say it, but you possibly wouldn't have noticed it otherwise...

As well as being very good, dry and structured, this is a rosé for nerds: made from Cabernet Franc and Grolleau, it is a the typical blend of the region, but one that isn't copied anywhere else in the world. Grolleau is high in acid and low in alcohol with pretty floral notes, while the Cabernet Franc has colour, some tannin, dark berry flavours and a bit more texture. Together they produce a wine that has all those components and more, making a wine that really is a solo charmer and certainly delicious with food.

Marquis de Goulaine make excellent wines on the Loire valley and have done so, under various guises, for centuries. They have vineyards and vineyard contracts in almost all of the appellations on the the river, making no-nonsense, clean, high-quality expressions of their terroir.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
