Celler del Roure, Vermell, Valencia

€18.99

Another delicious, juicy red from the brilliant Celler del Roure winery in Moixent, in the region of Valencia. This is vibrant and youthful with bright red flavours of cherries, strawberries and raspberries. The purity of fruit quality and the freshness of delivery makes it a real delight for summer lunches, aperitif and outdoor dining.

Its lovely qualities of brightness and freshness make it great when served with a slight chill. The effect is a bit like a Valencian Beaujolais! Great with fish like tuna through to red meats and tapas.

It's aged for six months in amphora-style clay tanks, which is very traditional and gives a gorgeous mouthfeel that is at once engaging, smooth and bright. This wine is a great advert for organic viticulture and the use of clay ageing vessels!

"A fruity expression on the primary aromas, you'd think you'd bitten into a bunch of ripe grapes" - Robert Parker
Vermell is a blend made from 70% Garnacha Tintorera (the very juicy, dark Alicante Bouchet grape) that has largely been planted after a Phylloxera out-break. Initially it was valued for its very dark colour and productive yields. But it has progressively found its place on the Iberian peninsula with large plantations in Galicia, Mancha, Valencia and the south of Portugal. Vermell also includes 30% Mandó, an indigenous variety, produced from young vinestock. Harvested by hand, the grapes are destalked and fermented with wild yeasts in stainless steel vats and some stone lagars to then be aged in amphora. Vermell brings out its truly vibrant flavours. We also find aromas of juicy red fruits as well as garrigue - so typical of Garnacha Tintorera - but without it being too ripe or oaky. An excellent introduction to this reinvented "old style" of wine from Celler del Roure. A wonderful find!

If you like them interesting yet authentic, this is for you. However, if you are just interested in really well-made wine, this is also for you!

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
