Corryton Burge, "Percival Norman", Barossa Valley Shiraz

This is the very smart, top-level red from one of Australia's most recognised wine families. In their new venture, the 6th generation of this family have made a stunning Shiraz that is as smooth, complex and rewarding as it is powerful, structured and dense.

A real treat of a wine, this is a big, full and rich red, full of black and red fruit flavours, spices and chocolate. It is a classic, big Barossa Shiraz delivering raspberry-chocolate and vanilla notes on the palate with fine-grained tannins and a very long finish. One glass at a time.

Selected from very old vines, the grapes are fermented in French hogshead barrels ans where they mature for 18 months after complete malolactic fermentation.

This sort of classic wine style can only come from classic regions and within these areas, old and established vineyards. The Burge siblings are essentially setting out from new, so how have they managed to achieve this quality? It's their surname - so much good business has been done by the previous five generations (especially their dad, Grant) that the family have built excellent relations with owners of some of the most prestigious vineyards across the region.

Southern and western districts of the Barossa provide some of the oldest and best red vines, and these are where Amelia and Trent get the Shiraz for this wine, named after Percival Norman Burge, their great-grandfather who channeled and managed the winery during the depression in the 1930s.

The Burge family have lived in the Corryton Park Homestead since their parents bought it in the 1990s, at which stage they registered the name as a company - just in case they had to use it - which is very handy: the Grant Burge winery and name and use of the name was sold to Accolade wines in 2015 and of course means that they're never, ever allowed to use the name in association with wine. However, because they registered this one earlier, they're out of the loop.

Plus, they sold the name: they held onto the winery itself in Illaparra, the Cellar-door (which is a term for a winery's own shop) in Tanunda, and possibly most importantly, the 300 hectares of vineyard across south Australia. These feed numerous other family projects, but it's the Corryton project that has the potential to best emulate the previous successes of the family history.

The lovely label depicts a Gryffin (or gryphon), of which two stone carvings sit on the gates of the estate. Legend has it that these fantastical beasts guarded gems and precious metals: the analogy for the winery, homestead and vineyard isn't lost on the family!

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
