Menade, Rueda, Verdejo
A real stunner, this is a wine that The Allotment fell for many years ago and it ha only improved in the years since. Superbly polished, this is organic winemaking that is classy and accomplished. If you already like Rueda, this is a real treat at the top end of the market; if you don't know Rueda yet, try this - it'll really open your mind!
The Rueda appellation is a brilliant source of bright, fresh and engaging white wines, but these have only relatively been seen in international markets. Largely due to the investment of very large Spanish wineries that had the resource to push exports, the region blossomed in the 2000s and conscientious wineries like this one, run by Alejandra Sanz and her two brothers Marco and Richard. Their organic and sustainable philosophies are far-reaching with biodiversity projects established across the vineyard territory for all sorts of projects, including wine. They are 6th-generation viticulturalists and winemakers and have become hugely successful (against the odds, as they say themselves) establishing the winery only in 2005.
This is fresh, textural and complex wine. Bright green and yellow apple flavours with honeysuckle and tropical notes. Delicious.
