Garnacha/Grenache

Grenache (in Spanish, Garnacha, in Catalan, Garnatxa) is perhaps the most widely planted variety of red wine grape in the world. It's a late ripener, so it really likes quite hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain and in the south of France.

It is generally spicy and soft on the palate with a relatively high alcohol content. However, it can lack acidity, tannin and colour, so it makes for good blends with other varieties such as Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. You'll find it most wines from the southern Rhône, where in Châteauneuf-du-Pape can make up 80% of the blend.

Lastly, it makes for wonderful rosé in France and Spain.
