Marimar Estate, La Masía, Don Miguel Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley 2019

We have run out of stock for this item.

A remarkable and profound Pinot Noir from one of the USA's top regions for the grape. Made by one of the most famous families in wine today, this wine is a triumph of site-selection, winemaking and the harnessing of the warm, Pacific climate married to the European sensitivities from which the Torres family have emerged as one of the crown jewels.

La Masía (or the farmhouse in Catalan), is the humble name that Marimar Torres gives to this part of her Californian project; the vineyard, named after her father Miguel, is atypical of the microclimatic influences of the San Francisco fog, warm continental air-mass and the cooling breezes from the Pacific. It is therefore perfect for growing the Burgundian varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

This is a sensational wine; velvet-smooth, intense, rich, powerful, complex and layered - it doesn't read like many Pinot Noirs that you'll come across. The palate is beautifully textured and intense, with a seriously impressive 13.5% alcohol, showing the restraint in the winery as well as the management of vines. Pursuing elegance and flavour, the wine shows berry flavours, summer fruits, blossom, sous bois (the French for forest floor, like undergrowth, twigs and leaves in the Autumn - proper romantic stuff) and really subtle spices. It's a panoply of flavour that really continues long after your mouth has emptied.

Aged in French barriques, a third of which are new, this is made from grapes that are grown in high-density vineyards in the cool eastern region of the Russian River Valley. Grapes are hand-picked as you'd probably expect for a Pinot of this soaring quality.

Delicious and interesting range of wines delivered promptly to my door. Not far off that lovely feeling of coming back laden from a good wine store but without any of the traffic or the worry of breaking the wine en route (very impressive travel wrap).
